Okay, so the general "rule" is that it's blue for characters and red for layouts, right? My school store also sells a light blue, what is that for?

there are no rules with these things. seriously. i don't think i ever heard anyone say "this color is for this, and that color is for that". whatever system you work out for yourself and as long as its works is the right one.

again, col-erase pencils are good for animation and just drawing in general because they simply put, erase well and go on smooth. they don't tear your paper up like a graphite pencil does. you can also build up a clean line over col-erase easily with a regular graphite pencil, or another, darker color.

Oh, thanks. Some teacher told me this back in an early animation class.

I think I'll get some of the light blue ones and use them for props.

great pencils overall, I use them all the time. As Frank said, there is no "defined" way you have to use them.

i'd like to add a follow up to this thread. i was speaking to a buddy of mine who was a drawn animator on "little bill". he was saying how they had their own system worked out between what particular color was used for each instance.

for example, if there was a trace back (a part of the image that isn't moving but needs to be in the frame and needs to be drawn in the same spot on each new cel. say a foot or arm that isnt moving), then it would be colored with a specific color. these rules were decided in-house.

lil_54, if you see this, feel free to chime in and correct me if im wrong.

I personally prefer standard "blue" for everything. I can see why it would help to have layouts/keys/inbetweens/whatever in different colors, but I like it all uniform. What a great product. My animation got much less stiff as soon as I switched from graphite to color.

I need a Red and Blue pencil for my Isometric drawing class, is that what their called? I wanna get good ones because we're pretty much drawing blue prints for the next 2 years until my Masters test. Where would I get a set of them?

Honestly, I just buy mine at my school's art store. I got curious as to how I would get boatloads of blue in the future, and I found that you can buy them as individual colors by the dozen:

http://www.amazon.com/Prismacolor-Col-E ... B0006YZZPA

It seems that you can only get so many individual colors in bulk, but they have the common ones like blue, non-photo blue, and red.

With each post I sound more and more like a Prismacolor sales rep.

wow nice find with the col-erase on amazon.com. i swear you're gonna eventually be able to buy just about anything from there.

jim, give the col-erase brand by prismacolor a try. again, they go on really nice, not waxy like some color pencils do, and they erase really well. they should be good to use for blue-print drawings i would assume, too.
