Glad I finally got the chance to play through this. The story is generic Japanese ghost story, but it works well enough in setting up the stage and has plenty of detail to fill it out. Graphically, it's dated, but with all the filters they used in place it still has it's own distinct look. I wouldn't call it a bad looking game. In my experience, the game was so dark, I couldn't see most of my surroundings until I was on top of them anyway. I kind of wished that more ghosts would appear in more unconventional ways. Most of the game wasn't super scary because you'd get a cutscene introducing 90% of the ghosts you encounter. The battles were always intense though. They use high frequency noise a lot in this game, and it really messed with my head.
The last section of the game was super easy in comparison to the section before it. I had to play the same area for 90 minutes tonight because I had no health items and the game kept trying to throw 2 strong and super fast ghosts at me at the same time. I finally figured out that if you wander around, one of them will attack you on his own, so once I beat him and saved the game, it wasn't too terrible getting through that part. Still, the ghosts in Night 3 are brutal compared to the rest of the game. The last boss was laughably easy. She barely even does anything, just teleports a few feet to the left or right every so often. She never even had a chance to attack me. Pretty sure she kills you in one hit, but like I said, she pretty much just stood there and let me shutter her to death. A let down sure, but after Night 3, I was kind of glad to be over with the game.
I'm pondering jumping into part 2 right now...
