There was a Nintendo Direct last night where they announced New Super Mario Brothers 2 for 3DS. I have excitement, though I will admit I'm semi sad for a few reasons.

Number one, the unrealistic hope that a New SMB2 would emulate the original SMB2 has been destroyed. Two, it looks exactly like New SMB Wii, which looked dang close to NSMB on DS... which looks exactly like New SMB Mii which is ALSO supposed to come out this year. So uhhhh yeah, I'm not sure what they're really doing with this brand. If New SMB Mii looks just like this only its 4 player and has Miis in it, I'll be pretty let down. The great thing about the old Mario games is how different they were from one another. I love NSMB Wii with all of my heart, and I certainly have room to love more of it, but even a forgiving Mario fan as myself has some feelings of sadness towards these two new ones.

That said, it's due in August and day one mother fuckers. It's gonna be hot. Hahaha.

Oh yeah, also cool from last night was FOLDERS are coming to the 3DS this Wednesday in a firmware update. Oh sweet heaven. 1993 here we fucking come. But seriously, one of the secret best parts of last night's presentation. I've already mapped out the folders I'll be making in my brain. I sit there and try to shuffle icons quite often, so this will be sweet as shit.

And this update will also allow them to patch games, and they plan on patching all the MK 3D course exploits, and apparently also patching some KI stuff. Not sure what they're patching on that one, game is gold as it is.

I thought the same thing Phil, while I do enjoy the new games, very much. I was hoping for something different. I'll still eat it up though, I love me some Mario.

Yeah that level is a brute! I thought I was the only one who spent hours on that level. I'd give up and come back to it the next day for more punishment!

Playing Art of Balance Touch for an EG review and I really like it. I always wanted to get it on Wii but never did. I think it might be the same exact game though if you already played it on Wii. But it's very nifty so far.

Massive new 3DS. I'm glad its massive, because what I love about the DS is how I can put it in my pocket. Makes it easier for me to say no.

edit: Just announced for US release. Same day as NSMB2 and for 200 buckers.

I am all in on this thing. My DSi XL is glorious. This looks a lot like that.

Yeah I'm reading how some people wanted that second stick added but honestly that would've split their market dramatically. from what I see its being sold as an alternative alongside the current 3ds?

Also why the hell wasn't this announced at e3 only two week ago?

E3 is officially the conference where you go to NOT announce things. Everything gets announced either right before E3, or in the weeks that follows.

Yeah its weird that it skipped E3. Guess they wanted full focus on Wii U.

A buddy of mine IMed me this morning saying how pissed he was that the 3DSXL doesn't have a second stick. I told him he was being ridiculous. The XL is not intended to be a replacement DS. It's not like the jump with DS Phat and it being replaced with the DS Lite. It is meant to be sold next to the standard 3DS, so I like that they kept all the core features the same.

The problem with the second analog stick is that every new game would basically have to use it. That's the one plus about the circle pad pro. It's an option the devs can use if they want to but they don't have to. Also I think calling it a 3DS and potentially having games that would be unplayable on the original 3DS (some devs would go deeper on that and make some serious games involving the 2nd stick and then you would need the circle pad pro to play them on the original) would be shitty.

Waiting until the next full gen of handhelds makes much more sense because then they can do the second analog stick and that will be the feature that makes the new games unplayable on the old system (like the DSi did with the camera and the 3DS did with 3D).

Random question. Wouldn't the 3DS games have the same pixel count on the giant one and would that have any impact on the visuals? That is of course assuming they do everything the same in the cards post release for this.

Yeah its the same resolution screen. Jaggies would be more pronounced I'm sure, but DS games looked fantastic on the XL, so I suspect they would look beautiful here too.

Speaking of which, I hear that regular DS emulation on this thing is going to display much nicer than it does on the current 3DS.
