I'm starting to work on my portfolio to apply to CalArts and I'm going to post here to get some feedback. I don't know if anybody on the smorg (powerdusk left) submitted a portfolio to get into an animation school? or could give me some tips.

It's all garbage, just quit while you're ahead.

Draw this and I will judge it with my years of expertise.

Hahahah, terrible.

Anyway, sure man, post away. I hear CalArts is a tough one to get into. It's a "real" school, I went to a fake one. I prepared a bit of portfolio and they didn't even look at it, as long as I told them I would give them my money then that was fine. That meant I went to school with a lot of talentless people which is why people there thought I was so good. I was only average, but in a sea of mediocrity, I guess my work did stand out.

You should have taken part in Art Tuesdays! I could have given you the edge I tell ya!

Haha anyway, yeah post away. Not sure how much help I'll be, but I'll try.

If only we didn't chase PowerDusk off. I bet he's making some nice pictures these days.

Yeah I couldn't find many animation schools that aren't a part of a chain of schools ( usually don't care what they produce). To be honest I'm pretty shitty with my character drawings, I'm fine when it comes to values and light logic etc but i've only taken one figure drawing class, I have 2 over summer and 2 during the fall to help me get prepped. I don't think people ever go to CalArts out of high school, most of them are in their 20s or have been working in the industry and want to get better.

Do you plan on going for traditional animation?

He actually switched to being a music major before he left here, haha.

If I didn't have to worry about working, I would go and get a degree in music.

Oh wow, I had no idea. I'm surprised he didn't mention it before he left. He did a lot of switcheroos, from animation to illustration (I think) and now music. That's what happens though. Most people don't stick with what they originally go for. Especially people in the art world I feel. I started with graphic design, and went for animation with the intention of learning 3D but went more 2D because I found I liked it more (modeling and rigging is boring. Well, modeling has its moments, but rigging was yuck). Thankfully going 2D didn't mean I had to switch majors or anything, they sort of let you choose your path at one point but you still learn both hand in hand.

I've learned some modelling but never actually animating it, i'd like to learn the 3D animation as well as character.

and a music major is tough, tons of technical crap that most musicians try and end up hating.

i went to UArts in philly where i got a BFA in Animation eventually. i would avoid adding any cartoon/comic book characters, yours or otherwise. they dont think much of it (for good reason) and unless its exceptional work (which is rare no offense) it could hurt you if its all you have. try to put in some still life drawings, stuff of landscapes or nature, or any portraits you might have. sometimes having a sletchbook is good too. they'll just flip through it just to get an idea of how you think.

hope that helps!
