I'm getting pumped for pumpkins. This year I really want to try and get something out of control going compared to what I've made before. I already have the idea in mind and it's rather complicated (for me) so I'm not sure how it will come out.

Instead of waiting until the day before Halloween to buy my pumpkins, I decided to get two of them this weekend. I'll probably only have time to carve one of them, but I wanted a back up plan. They're pretty darn big. I'd say double in size (maybe more so) than the ones I've done previously. I hid them in my backyard so no one can smash them and I hope they hold up for the next week.

I look forward to getting in there. Especially with what I feel like I learned last year. I just wish there was an easier way to transfer the stencil to the pumpkin. That part is ALWAYS tricky.

So I of course didn't have the time I needed to really work on my pumpkin the way I wanted. I ended up leaving a lot out. Anyway. here is my Temple of Doom pumpkin.

Yesterday I went to a local farm for my nieces birthday party for hayride. I saw that they had freaking HUGE ass pumpkins so I told Dem I was going to buy a huge one to carve up for Halloween. So I bought this sucker.

Image

I guess this picture doesn't do the size of it justice because there is nothing around it, but needless to say I couldn't even fit it into my trunk. Thankfully my parents brought their van to the place and I was able to put it in there.

I get the pumpkin home, set it all up how the people suggested so that it lives until Halloween, and thats when I notice three pretty significant soft spots. I was so concerned with the part it was laying on being soft (it was really white under there, but still felt hard) that I must have just overlooked them. I don't think it has a chance of making it a month.

So I'm kind of torn as to what to do with it. I thought that if it starts looking a little bad maybe I'll just carve it up early. Either that, or just make lots and lots of pumpkin pie and pumpkin pancakes. :\

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I just looked and the spots are even bigger and bugs are all over the spots. What a waste of 30 dollars. Never buying a pump this early again. :(

Tell me about it. :( It's my fault, I should have checked it better.

Maybe I'll be able to make some awesome pumpkin pies and shit out of it though.

PUMPKIN TIME!

Sure you guys already saw buuuuut

I didn't know what I wanted to carve this year, so I asked Dem and she said "Do that goblin from Troll 2" and so I did.

I probably should have waited until it dried out a bit more before I took photos. This is what its supposed to look like

So this was quite hard. Its been a year since I tried something like this, but last year when I did Jacquo it wasn't very planned and I only used one tool. This time I was much better prepared. I bought a new dremel and ditched the Pumpkin Dremel. I bought a bunch of bits for it that are used for glass cutting. I gotta say, that thing chewed through the pumpkin like butter. I was basically drawing on the pumpkin with the dremel.

To try and save time on starting it out I decided to see what would happen if I used the sanding tip attachment for the dremel. I had to take it outside because there was pumpkin flying everywhere, but I took the skin off really quickly with it. I have a bunch of little scalpels that Dem bought me years ago for sculpting clay (which I never used before) that I thought would work good on the pumpkin. They did. Between them and the dremel I was able to get pretty detailed.

Obviously for something like this you can't use a template, you just gotta go free hand. So it was very difficult, but it only took three hours and that includes cleaning the pumpkin out.

One thing I hate about carving pumpkins like this is that they're not good jack o'lanterns. When you put a light in them they just don't really work. They're made to be looked at in the light. So I think I'm going to do another this weekend, but do it more classic style.

edit: I've come a long way since this piece of shit

Anyone have any thoughts on simple pumpkin designs?
My girlfriend has never carved a pumpkin so we're going to attempt that on friday.
I haven't carved one since I was probably 14. I'm tempted to take my dremel to one to see how that works out, but I have 0 artistic talent so I'll probably stick with knife style.

The clssic Jack O Lantern is a good start...you can take the design wherever you want with that too...give him a small eye and a big eye or a really fucked up mouth....its simple but can be very creative and fun.
