Why would anyone think that's a cool or funny prank...

ok im gonna troll this thread just this once. at least im giving a warning right? hah

so, the other night im watching TV and i see a commercial come on that at first i thought was for something like mass effect or a final fantasy game. there all these characters running around and shooting each other, and it was all exciting and whatnot. then i says "starcraft 2", and im like "whut?"

but i was interested. so i go online and look up screen shots. maybe im mising something here. but im not. its little guys and little ships fighting each other on a giant map, and i insatntly fell asleep. RTS's mean absolutely noithing to me, and i avoid them like the plague.

what is going on in starcraft 2 that warrents such an action packed commercial? for the life of me i can't imagine it.

Blizzard's commercials are often just huge cutscene montages. I guess it's because their games aren't really that flashy. Commercials featuring gameplay wouldn't attract as many people as those flashy cutscenes. I guarantee Diablo will be the same way when it comes out.

Bioware does it with almost every one of their products too. It's pretty deceptive. Look at Dragon Age and the new Star Wars MMO. Mass Effect does it too, but I'm pretty sure they can (probably they have) get away with throwing some gameplay in there and not having it seem too out of place. It's definitely their most appealing game from a visual standpoint.

I kind of like that boring RTS stuff, but I totally understand where you're coming from.

If you don't like RTS, you don't like RTS. I can't make you like it. It's a strategy game. It requires you to think and if thinking is too boring for you, then that's just too bad.

One of my biggest internet pet peeves: stopping by a thread about a game to piss on everyone's parade. A casual glance down the Video Game forum's thread titles and I see about 15 games that I have zero interest in. Care to count how many times I've posted in those threads about how I don't like those games and/or genres?

You know what's boring to me? Mindlessly going down corrador and corrador shooting down some monsters, or nazis, or zombies, or zombie nazis or nazi monsters or monster aliens. That to me is boring. Button mashing games are boring. Pretty much everyone of those 3rd person game where you press A to attack and B to special attack hords of bad guys until you come across a bigger bad guy who takes more hits to kill are boring. I pretty much consider 99% of the games out there today to be boring. You don't see me going to the other threads going, "Hey, what's the big deal about so and so game? It's fucking boring!"

I'm just tired of people calling RTS games boring. If it's so god damn boring, why do people still play Starcraft for 10+ years? Man, people must REALLY be desparate for activity. I've had enough. You know what I think is boring? Metal Fucking Gear. That has to be the most boring game I've ever played. I'm sorry. I gave it a shot, it's fucking boring as shit. I move a little, then it's cut scene after cut scene. Bad scripts. I want to play a video game, not watch your shitty cut scenes with shitty dialogue. It's fucking boring.

haha oh boy.

I have no problem with differing opinions, I have a problem with trolling and I have a problem with feeling like I have to defend why I enjoy something.

I wish i liked RTS. A couple of my friends love them and I would love to play online with them. I'll go to their place, bring a case of beer, sit, drink, and watch them play Age of Empires for hours. I enjoy the games, I just don't think I have the patience to play them myself.
I'm actually visiting one of those friends this weekend and i'm hoping to convince him to go out and buy SC2 so I can see it in action.

I love RTS, but only blizzard's really, and the reason the commercials are so action packed is that, the games have some pretty crazy cutscenes, blizzard always gives you a huge boner when you enter a cutscene, the one when kerrigan is pinned by the zerg in a flashback was god damn amazing.

whoa everyone calm the fuck down and get the sticks out of your asses. i thought i could ask a question about why i felt there was a huge difference between what i percieved as an action game in the commercial, and then i saw an RTS. so i came to the thread where i thought i could get an answer. thats all. dante got the point, and nate gave me a good answer so i'll take that.

i think some people need to watch fight club in here. you are not your bank account. you are not your khakis. you are not your fucking RTSs.

I knew there had to be a reason for Steve to purposely troll up all those threads, so I decided to look in the one thread I haven't visited and... here's my answer.

Frank, you mentioned how you saw that commercial to me on IM yesterday. My thing is, why were you surprised when you looked at the screen shots? It's Starcraft. Of course that's the sort of game it's going to look like. I don't see how you were surprised.

You were expecting Donkey Kong?

Alright, I'll try to provide my non angry 2 cents. Blizzard knows the majority of the people buying the game are people that are already fans of the franchise. The commercials are made to appeal to the rest of the market and unfortunately, what the rest of the market today wants to see is amazing graphics and shit blowing up. People today have the attention span of a fly so they tailored the commercials to them. I haven't actually even seen the a commercial for Starcraft. I'm actually surprised they showed them on TV. I can't remember the last time I saw a TV commercial for a PC game. You can't make an RTS look like a FPS. That's just not how it works. You actually can in SC2 but that's a different story all together.
