Should downloadable games have return policies?

I believe the market value right now is at $60 for xbox and PS3 games and $50 for Wii games.

thats not entirely what i meant. for example, while this is not entirely true, i bought a PS3 for MGS4. games like rock band and wii fit cost 100-200 beans.

Yeah, I think what its at now is at high as most people are willing to pay for a new game. Not even I would pay $70 for a single game.

this is another facet of my topic: i paid 70 dollars for chrono trigger when it first came out on the SNES in 1995. thats what it cost. n64 games basically cost 60-70 dollars new while at the time PS1 and PS2 games were around 50. what are you willing to pay for a super rare game?

60 beans is really pushing it for me as far as a game goes, the game has be a MUST have before I even think about it. I usually have no problem waiting 6+ months for the price of a game to go down, or buying used.

I guess if its really rare, has to be imported, or is a special edition, then I'll go over. $60 for regular games though, tops. Should be $50 though.

haha, yeah, I was just making a joke post. I usually decide on how much I'm willing to pay for a game based on how long I see myself playing it. If I'm going to be playing a game for years, then I'd easily shell out $60 for it. And $70 for Chrono Trigger back in the day would equate to probably $100 in today's dollars. Video games for the most part are pretty inflation proof.

What is interesting is that the PC versions of all games (and PC games themselves) are almost ALWAYS 50 or under.

TF2 = 20
Left 4 Dead = 40
Street Fighter IV = 40
Bioshock = 20

Hell, look at the Orange Box, it's 30 dollars! For 5 FULL games.

Just a thought.

I don't want to say too much on the topics, but the reason PC games are cheaper (or so I believe) is that there is no middle man to pay. Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft all make money off each game on their consoles, where as on the PC that doesn't exist, so they're able to be much more fair with their prices.

I don't see how you can return downloadable games since once they're in your memory, you can just make as many copies of it as you wish. If the game doesn't work, then that's a different story. Then again, I guess they can implement it with cryptography. Like you will need to download a key in order to decrypt the software and if you "return" the game, you'll no longer have access to the key. The key would have to be updated every time the software is ran. So anyone can download the software but they need to purchase "licenses" in order to decrypt the software to run it. If they return their "license", the software will no longer work.

Should downloadable games be returnable? Man, thats a good one! I have never returned a game just because I didn't like it, mainly because I'm the kind of person who does research before buying a game. If you really wanted your money back, you couldn't go and say that the game just doesn't work, because the company could come back and say that its because your hardware is messed up so you need to contact the hardware provider, or get a new machine. You also can't take your downloadable game to gamestop and trade it in for a new one either. So what developers/publishers should do, for ALL downloadable games, is provide a demo, so that this is never an issue.

Now for how much I'm willing to pay to play a game, I say I put that around $400. I was set on buying a 360, after playing Call of Duty 2 and also for the fact that most games are multi-platform anyway, but after playing Ratchet and Clank, I changed my mind and went with the PS3, because for some reason I love me some Ratchet and Clank.

1. Steam sometimes refunds your money if the game doesn't work like it is supposed to, other than that you're boned. I guess this is a policy I can live with because I always do plenty of research on game before I buy it, so I rarely run across a game that I dislike.

2. Like I said previously, 60 beans is pushing it for me. Also, with the current gen being the exception (stupid 360), I base my console purchase on the system's game library as a whole.

1. After buying Fat Princess this weekend I'm starting to lean towards there needs to be something in place for refunds. Had I known I would only be able to play 1 out of every 6 online attempts, I probably wouldn't have paid $15 for this game. To me it's kind of like buying a disk with a small scratch. Sure some of the game is still playable, but I can't enjoy the full game.

2. I tried breaking this down to a $/hr of entertainment. The best I could come up with is about $3/hr. So for example, if I can get 20 hours out of a $60 game, I'm more than happy to pay for it.
But the question is, how much am I willing to pay. To take the absolute extreme case... if they released a full Shenmue series including the final chapters, I would probably pay $100 for it. If I didn't own the system, I'd probably buy that too. So in that regards it would probably be in the $500 range.

hahaha i just realized how ridiculous it sounds to say I'm pissed about paying $15 but would gladly pay $500 for another game.
