I'd be willing to bet money that if the exact same press announcement was made word for word by Google or Microsoft no one on here would have any problem with it.

You guys hate Apple which is fine. I respect people's right to dislike whatever they want. What I find offensive is the fact that many times on this site that hatred translates into the notion that people who don't share that hatred of Apple and use their products are somehow ignorant, stuck-up, hipster assholes. If that's what you think of me and my family because of an electronic device that we own/use then thats fine too. I'll keep it in mind going forward.

And that's why I hate it. I don't even like what they announced. I don't want animated textbooks that are 4gb to download, and I certainly don't want to buy them via iBooks, but the idea is fine. Apple has the pull to make it successful and potentially cause some change in the awful textbook industry.

edit: And little kids love that shit. You'd be surprised how many schools are using ipads. If these things get some dumb ADHD kid to read his fucking textbook, then great.

I don't think anyone that has participated in this conversation has shit on this for being an Apple thing other than Frank, but that's expected of him. Russ said he doesn't want to bring an LCD to class with him, and all I said is that it's going to be a while for something like this to catch on (and come on, Apple's graphic was bullshit, I'll make fun of that regardless of what company made it). We're speaking in broader terms here than just iPad, at least, I am.

Also, I would buy an iPad if they were like 300 dollars cheaper. I almost bought an iPhone last week. I like to make fun of them, but I don't hate them.

For them to be any cheaper, Apple would have to either
1) Severely cut into their profit margins ( I don't think this will happen)

or

2) Have them assembled by monkeys which will work for bananas. (Could be possible if they could assemble enough monkeys and train them efficiently)

A newer model will come out and cost the same or more than the previous model and the previous model becomes obsolete and no one wants them anymore. Instead of becoming cheaper, they simply get discarded. Thus their products will always be the same price.

That is true, which is why I never ended up buying an iPod/Touch for myself. I still sort of want a Touch, I might give into that at some point.

I think the nano is actually really good and the one I have has served me well these past 3+ years. But I guess you want a touch to play games on.

Here's my thoughts on it. Apple is like Marky Mark. They say the same shit everyone else is saying, but they get more spotlight because they ARE Apple. But the way they say shit is kind of douchey a lot of times.

Hating Apple products is stupid, because Apple makes good products. As far as I know the only person in this thread with a bias hatred of Apple is Frank. I don't like them because dealing with their enterprise team has made my life miserable. But I understand the business moves they have made. It makes them smart, still assholes, but they are smart assholes. The users they command is the most rabid, loyal fanbase on earth. What they have built is incredibly impressive. People who have never used a tablet before if given the choice between an ipad and a better android tablet would choose the ipad.

that bullet point of "current" is a non issue and is misleading. a book written only a few years ago say that pluto is a planet, but as we all know now that isn't the case. we now need to buy a new science book that says pluto is a dwarf planet. do you honestly think that your ipad version, or any digital version, of the same book is magically going to be "current" the moment some scientist proclaims what is and what is not a planet? it's not. it requires the same work hours for the pupblisher to edit the text which will then be a new edition. do you also honestly think you will simply be given this new digital edition for free? you'll have to buy it again.

also, i remember throwing my book bag across the living room when i came home from school without the danger of destroying a $600 peice of hardware.

Apple makes some neat products (I love my 64gb touch). But I strongly dislike how they put out a new "must-have" version every single year.

If they just went iPhone 3 -> a year with no new iPhone -> iPhone 4 -> year with no new iPhone -> iPhone 5 I would consider buying an iPhone. I have a Blackberry Curve 8530 I've had it for about a year and a half. They put out the new 9-series BBs, I like how they look but I don't feel obligated to upgrade and I likely won't until at least the summer if not longer.

Also the fact that the base price for the iPhone 4s 16gb is like $650 here with no plan is insane.

I think the ideal way to put out their shit would be iPhone one year, iPad the next. That way they will be substantially better than the previous version (imagine going from iPhone 2 to iPhone 4). However since people keep buying the new product the second it comes out every year I guess their current model is clearly working.
