I can't believe tax is so low in your area. That's insane.

Taxes here are 9.25%. Unbelievable.

Lou I might be one of those jerks that comes to your store with a bunch of old DVDs. Thinking its time to clear some space out, but I'll probably spare you and go to one of the closer shops.

HST here is 13% and a few years back it was 15%.

That's what you get for free health insurance.

It's only a good deal if you're constantly in and out of the hospital. If they calculated how much tax you have to pay according to how often you go to the hospital, I'd be all for that.

The thing is I've always known things to be this way. Tax has always been like this for me (and everyone would still complain even if it was lower) so it's not as big of a deal.

Also I have used it a lot. I would say I wind up going to an emergency clinic minimum 3 times a year. Although there have been years when I've gone like 10+ times. And that's just for things that are kind of urgent but not bad enough to go to Emergency at the hospital. Also I had 2 specialists I saw regularly at the Children's Hospital throughout most of my childhood and teenage years.

Its a good deal the FIRST time you go to a hospital... Seriously. I was in there a few weeks back and I just got the statement from my health insurance. $24k!!! I only had to pay the co-pay (so like $200).

Work Story: Pretty sure i'm getting laid off very soon.

Extended Version:

The company i work for got in early with "company A" when they were building a data center. my company signed a lease agreement with company A for data center space. About a year after the building was completed, company A sold the building to company B, so company B inherited the lease agreement, but immediately they wanted to leverage us out use our space so they could use it for their own (company B is a large, multinational, multifaceted tech corporation). Now, obviously, we have contracts with our clients that specify at which site their data is hosted (this is a BIG deal because my site is located outside the D.C. Blast zone), and we had a lease, so we figured "hey, no big deal, ain't shit they can do." So, two years go by. Well, company B lawyered up, we lawyered up, and company B found a loophole in our contract. We ONLY lease raised-floor data center space. We do not lease office space. We are currently housed in an office in the building. So company B is kicking us out of our office. Due to OSHA regulations, we can't work strictly out of the data center, like, set up our desks and shit in there. Now, since we have a lease on the data center, and we have contracts with our clients, we have to PAY company B to act as "smart hands" for any service requests that happen in our data center space (basically, my job). Additionally, I'll have to train the asshole who is taking my job.

WHORE. DADDY.

what a bunch of assholes. at least good site ops guys are hard to find.

what are you responsible for now? what kind of systems do you maintain? There are some positions open in our Herdon, VA office, I could forward your resume if you want some help.

see if any of these spots would be something you were interested in

My dad had a situation like that. He worked for Nortel. He had to train his replacement from India over the phone. Apparently this dude was taking on the jobs of like 3-5 people and he was not getting any of it. Like on my dad's last day the guy says "So Ron, if anyting goes wrong I will give you a call" dude didn't even get that he was taking my dad's job. He got lucky though. The wave of layoffs after him got jack shit. He got a decent severance and some free membership to a group that helped him get another job. But fuck those guys. He worked there for like 15-25 years and then just "bye".

Appreciate the link. Herndon is a little far for me to commute, though I'm qualified for all three of those jobs, Data Center Lead might be a little bit of a stretch, but i could probably fake it til i make it. Net Eng is not a position i've held before, though i'm pretty sure i have the knowledge to fulfill the requirements.

Funny story. We were going to move to the UK in August because my wife was accepted to grad school, but shit fell through because my Visa application was denied (long, dumb story). We were dead set on going, had the cruise tickets purchased, sold our furniture, sold my car and my wife gave notice so her employer hired out her position. So now she has no fucking job. Well, we really wanted to move away from this area, so we were looking in SoCal and some other places for jobs, but we couldn't find anything before we had to re-up our apt lease, so we just went ahead and renewed it, since we knew we could (barely) pay for it with my salary. We decided to use the cash from selling my car to pay off some credit cards instead of for moving. Now this bombshell drops and we're wishing we would have just said fuck it and taken the chance and moved away.

That's how it is with all those places man. No corporation has any care for their employees. They really don't. It sucks.

Well I think the datacenter is right near Dulles. I don't know the area very well, only been there once. But if you change your mind I know all 3 of the hiring managers really well and it is a cool company to work for. The pay is really good and they certainly would never do what is being done to you now. They would move datacenters before letting people go. Of course I can't promise anything, but I can at least get your foot in the door.

I said "outside the DC blast zone." Which means that if a nuke were to fall on DC, the data center at which i work is outside the area that would be the immediate 75mi range of the explosion. Lots of federal agencies now have fallback positions outside the blast zone on the I-81 corridor.
