I'm certainly not going to negate their whore-daddy-ness... but i had a problem with my cable box (the channels were flashing and they had vertical lines running through them) and i called to see if they could fix it. It turned out to be only time i've ever seen powering off for 30 seconds and plugging it back in worked. Even for such a simple stupid problem, they offered me HBO and Starz free for a year and digital preferred free for 2 months.
Moral of the story is, bitch to them and you can get shit for free

I know my cable box has been screwy lately. Here goes a short story that I'm sure most of you can picture.

My mother comes in complaining that comcast is down to me. "I know" All the while I'm playing Madden against Carmen and she walks in front of the tv like all mothers do. I throw a pick and stand up and go "GAAAAAHHHH, Well call Comcast then!!" She calls comcast and tries to hand me the phone. I'm so frustrated that I say "I don't want to talk to those idiots!" My mom apoligizes to the person on the phone. I start yelling about how they are going to tell me to unplug the router, cable box, and turn my computer off. What does the person on the other end of the phone tell my mother that I should do? Alas my internet is working about every five mins and the cable light keeps blinking at me. I swear it loves to mock me that FUCKING cable box. I want to smash it with the biggest thing imaginable. I know its overdoing it but I don't give a shazbot!

well, with the OTA HD antenna, it wasn't too bad. we only had to DL cable shows. however, that meant no DVR and no kids channels. this was my valentine's gift to the wife and kid, I swallowed my pride and went crawling back to Comcast.

mid-day every day it seems like Comcast shits the bed.
I notice when I get home from work, I'm kicked off IM. And on weekends, it seems like sometime during the day the internet just doesnt work. its been like this for a week and i never feel like calling.

see my post above.

I called Comcast and they told me to go get a new modem.
So I got one on Thursday and it didnt work at all.
I called them up and told them what happened and they needed to send a technician out between 1 and 5 on SATURDAY! Man, no internet thursday and friday killed me. I need my internets. It ended up being a bad modem that they gave me. Bastards. I was back up and running at 3 yesterday.

I know it may not be the most "active time" that people use the internet, but Comcast always must feel it necessary to shut down the internet at about 2 am a couple nights a week for about 30 minutes. It always happens right after I get home from work/friends house and it pisses me off...

Yeah I had a good deal for the first year in my house getting a few premium channels and shit for cheap. But its only for the first year. You have to remember to cancel that shit or they'll renew it at regular price the next year.
So now I have 2 HD boxes, DVR on one of them, Internet, and only HBO as a premium channel. I pay $160 a month.

I contest that statement about having to have cable. I don't really see the need for cable. I rarely even watch public television let alone cable or premium channels. I've never owned any DVRs either. I don't even know how they work. I'm guessing you just program it to record crap from the TV at a designated time. I think internet is a much bigger necessity than cable. I don't think it's necessary for multiple HD boxes either. That's just a bit of splurging in my opinion.

I was against cable when Demi and I first moved out and I had zero intention of getting it. Now here I am with phone, internet and HD cable from Verizon. I then had zero intention of owning a DVR and I now I have one of those too. I don't really watch much TV, but I do enjoy having all these services. The way I see it is I bought an HDTV, so I might as well be taking advantage of the medium and have HD cable to go along with it. Regular TV just looks like turds on an HDTV. Since VCR's have pretty much gone the way of the dodo, DVR is the only way to record what you want to watch. I know damn well I could go download these things off the internet (illegally) but sometimes I don't think about these shows. I might be flicking through the channels and come across something I'd like to watch later and record it. I have about 7 movies on my DVR all waiting to be watched. I could live without all this stuff, but it's fun to have.

Yeah, it all comes down to whether you want to shell out the cash for this stuff. But none of this stuff is essential. It's all just luxury. I can watch HD stuff just from over-the-air signals. Plus there is always the option of Netflix. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than premium cable. Unless you are glued to the TV every night, I think a lot of what you pay for just goes to waste.

my fucking cable went out at 10. I gave it a little bit thinking it was a temporary thing and it's 10:30 now and still nothing. I call in and a recording says there is an outage in my area and they're working on it.
this blows.
Luckily I'm still able to use my cell phone as a modem for my laptop so I'm not completely without internet if this goes on for a long time.
