It killed Linkedin, Reddit, and I'm assuming other sites too.

The more technical explanation is the NTP in certain Linux OS has a bug in it when an extra second was added the clock, the computers didn't know what to do and started freaking out. The bug is also present in older versions Oracle SDK of Java. So if you're running the bugged version Linux or Java, then you need to fix those machines. Pretty much everyone is running Linux and Java so everyone is fucked.

linux is open source. while there are some proprietary versions out there, they are all based off the free shit, they just offer support so companies use their distro and pay them handsomely..so there isnt really one dude to fire.

Neil deGrasse Tyson (a serious astrophysicist/"watch out guys" meme) was talking about these on twitter. Apparently the clocks on any GSP devices are something like 16 seconds ahead of the real time because the satellites connected to them do not use leap seconds.
