Did your guys' generation have some sorta crazy fad, like my generation had with pokemon? And what's the time frame of a generation?

I don't know why I was wondering this?

yeah ill agree with steve. for my childhood, it was transformers. however, like TMNT a few years later, they still stuck around.

can we even call these fads? a fad is something that goes away and people forget about. pokemon, transformers, TMNT, the NES are all things that have managed to last throughout the years.

i remember a ton of fads growing up, but not too many involving games.

Like gank said, things that are forgotten are more what I would consider fads. Some of the biggest i remember growing up are pogs, slap bracelets, yo-yo's and razor scooters.

Good point about fads. I guess my generations fad was probably POGS and those flick wrist bands.

POGS were ridiculously popular for about a year or two. I remember everyone I knew was getting millions of them and by the time I was finally able to buy a set with my own money is when they weren't popular anymore. Then I guess because the bubble burts you could find all sort of cheap knock offs and my Mom would keep buying them for a long while after that. I still kind of enjoyed getting them after that point, but I certaintly didnt tell anymore.

The flick wrist bands were huge too. Then everyone started slicing their wrists with them and they changed them to have a thin cloth over top of them, but the plastic would still break through the cloth over time and still cut people up so they went away. Though I think I've seen them somewhat recently, so they're still kind of around.

Oh another good one was making your own shirt with that neon glue shit. So many people had shirts made with that crap. I actually remember John's Mom (he grew up right next to me) was really good at it and made us some really sweet NES shirts. That shirt had to be one of my favorite shirts growing up, but if that was worn by anyone now they would be laughed at forever. Do you remember that John?

And now speaking of clothing, there were these jackets that were huge for like a year or two towards the end of grade school. I don't remember the names of them, but I think they were some sort of Fila jacket. They were these huge obnoxious fluffy things, usually in the colors of whatever sports team the person picked out with a huge logo on the back. They had detachable hoodies and the only way to put the jacket on was to pull it over your head. They were big and ugly as shit. This was another thing everyone was getting and I got mine (a Flyers one believe it or not) late, but I still loved finally having one anyway.

I hated fad stuff, I would ALWAYS get it late if I ever got it and then I always felt like "What the fuck, now it's not good enough?" Once I got into high school I stopped giving a shit about that sort of stuff completely because I realized how worthless it all was. I was pretty good at seeing what things were fads and just ignored them all together.

Outside of that stuff, Ninja Turltes, Ghostbusters, and NES were all pretty huge growing up.

Dante, if I can peg your age group right, I think one of your biggest fads was probably Furbies. God those things were HUGE when I first started working at KB Toys. Then not much longer after the Christmas they came out they all dropped price big time and were never seen of again. Thank god, I hated that fucking thing.

And if you have a sister around the same age, probably Spice Girls and NSYNC dolls. Another thing our store had millions of, people went ballistic over, and then had stock piles selling at about 3 dollars a pop for years afterward. Yuck.

dude those flick wrist bands were EVERYWHERE. I remember going into little mom and pop stores and they had a display of them up near the counter where you pay for things. That is probably one of the few fads i participated in. At least those things were reasonably cheap though.

Oh and I just remembered another fad, hacky sack. I'm pretty sure they were around way before and they are still around today, but for about a year or 2, they were huge and everyone had one. By the time I got in on that one, only stoners played it anymore. But hey, some of those guys were pretty cool too.

Pogs

Yo-Yos

Flick Wrist Bands

Marbles (They were huge for awhile and then went away)

Digimon and tomagochi pet things

transformers

ninja turtles

pokemon cards

magic the gathering cards

Nintendo Power (for awhile there in the early 90s you had to own nintendo power to be
cool but by like 1996 or so no one gave a shit anymore, I blame the internet haha)

Terrible music: Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, etc.

Good Music: early 90s buzz around bands like Tool, NiN, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana

'Portable Gaming Devices' - for awhile it was super cool and everyone had to have either a game gear or an old school Gameboy, then after a year or two people stopped caring, I ended up getting my first Gameboy for free from a kid who got bored with his.

These things called Crazy Bones
Image

Having an Atari (people my age, and around where I live) because of our demographic most of my friends and I weren't around for the original Atari fad, but there was this huge resurgence in like 1994 - 6 where everyone I knew was trying to get their hands on one because it was oldschool and cool

Flannel, Tye-Dye, and Faded Ripped Jeans - in the early 90s, the more it looked like you had a full time job at a local gas station the cooler you were.

Hockey Cards - these things always come in waves, for awhile everyone had to have hockey cards at my school, then just as quick as they came everyone stopped giving a shit

I'm sure there are tons more that I'm just forgetting. It's been awhile since I've thought back about the 1990s.

Those jackets you are talking about were Starter jackets. I had a Charlotte Hornets one and I think there was about five other people that had the same exact jacket. Grandma-ma FTW.

I had a white sox starter jacket. I don't even think I watched baseball back then, but I did have cards. I guess they were my favorite team? I think I just wanted to be in with the cool kids, but soon after I realized you can't just buy a jacket and be accepted.

I can't remember too many off the top of my head but:

Pokémon
Yu-gi Oh
Pogs
Crazy Bones
Bionicles (maybe)
Marbles
Transformers
Shitty boy/girl bands
Gameboys

Were all big at some point while I was in elementary school.

Baltar! CRAZY BONES! That was definitely a fad, haha. Everyone at my elementary when I was in 5th grade had those. I remember playing for keeps and winning some cool alien ones!

I did have a Furbie also, haha. I just remember being excited getting one than absolutely hating it the next day.

I also had some pogs, haha.

Pokemon was/is definitely my favorite. I still like playin the games haha.

ohhhhhhhhh what about tamagotchi's? I hated those fuckin things. I swear 90% of girls and a large percentage of guys in my school had them. The dreamcast memory card even had something like it built in.
