BTW your book idea was a good one John. Dem said she saw you got a couple of doubles (so did we). Hang onto those things as they will be destroyed. I've already bought Brown Bear and a few others twice. And I've thrown some out and had back ups.

You got the changing bed too? That thing will probably be used 5 times at most. The crib looks almost exactly like the one I have.

We didn't get a changing table. What we bought at first were these changing pads. We didn't have room for the table and the pads we could just throw wherever when we were done with them. They wiped down easy too if there were poop on them.

Actually the pads may have really been intended for the table, but we had no room for the table.

Anyway, room looks nice dude. Good job.

jim, i've got a question for ya actually. the insepctor found a pipe that he called "illegal" in the basement. said that it may have been done by an unlicensed plumber or maybe a friend of the family. i dont know the proper terms for it, but it looks like a vent coming off of a stack that goes up? on the other side of the wall is the toilet, and that diagonal pipe connects to a large stack that goes up through to what i believe is the roof of the house.

Image

That verticle pipe goes to the outside and terminates here like this:

In your opinion, should i get a plumber out to take a look at this? Or is this something that isn't really a big deal?

Here's a little diagram that hopefully explains it a bit better:

Again, i'm just not sure if its something i should be worried about, and if i should get a plumber out to look at it or not. thanks duder for any opinions.

I don't know if I'd be too worried about it. I'm trying to think why they would even do that at all, it looks pretty pointless. They may have had problems with the sewer backing up, and they may have been using that as a cleanout to snake the drains, but why would they vent it to the outside? As long as theres no smell, the toilet flushes right, and you don't mind those pipes being there, I wouldn't worry too much. Its definitely more of an eye sore then anything else.

When you say inspector did you mean Plumbing inspector or the Home inspector?

he was a home inspector. that's exactly what he said about it. he didn't quite see the point with it. the pipes are back in the basement corner, and you wouldn't see them unless you were doing the laundry or using that toilet down there so they don't stick out too much. the home inspector simply said that if i wanted to look into it more, i could get a plumber out to take a peek at it before settlement. however it doesn't seem like a big issue, bceause the basement is really dry and doesn't smell. thanks for the input, man! appreciate it a lot.

I've been working on a patio since April because my friends are asshole teachers with the entire summer off work. Last summer they offered to help and I waited before starting the project until they did, but they never showed up. This summer they offered to help again and I figured I'd get started by myself and then they could help me finish.... well once again they haven't showed up yet, but I'm about 80% done. On friday, the gas company is coming to put in a quick connect on the outside to my natural gas on the inside so I can put the grill out there. If it doesn't rain friday, I'm planning on finishing it as long as I have enough time to haul all the gravel I need.

I have a boatload of dirt that I dug up with no clue what to do with, so I put up a 2.5 foot retaining wall in my front yard to help even out the hill. I put up the wall this past weekend and I'm spending this week moving dirt by hand from the backyard to the front. I have to say it looks pretty nice, and worked out reasonably cheap. I wanted to do stone, but that was going to be $300-350 for just the front wall and no sides. I went with treated lumber and got the whole thing done for $225 including screws and shit.

I'll post some pics later this week.

you vent to the outside to allow sewer gas out and allow air in. if you dont allow air into the system, it will not drain properly.

there were a ton of things done "improperly" in my house the inspector pointed out. but you could tell it was stuff the builder did. until it stops working, I wouldn't worry about it. however, you should definitely use it to try and knock the price down. figure out what it would cost to fix and adjust your offer. then fix it if you want, or keep the money.

Take a look at the picture again, the stack is vented through the roof. What it looks like to me, is they added a cleanout for clearing the drains. Venting that through the side of the house has no benefit, unless they wanted it for running smaller cable through the drains from the outside. I doubt that much thought went through their brains though.

Homeowners do some goofy shit.

hah that pic is a few months old now. i raised the concern, the seller's "fixed" it by removing the pipe and capping it, and i''ve been living in the house for a bit over a month now. no problems so far. still have some odds and ends that need to be squared away around here, like a few boxes sitting in corners that i don't quite know where to file them away yet, but house it good to go.

Not exactly a home improvement, but my stupidity just cost me 300 bucks and a headache. :(

Dem called me around 2 yesterday saying she thought there was a leak. There was water in the basement, on the floor and in our crawl space, also on top of our washer/dryer. We have an open pipe up by the crawl space that our washer empties out into. My Dad came over and took a look at it. We ran the water to try and get it to gush out again and figured out it was coming from a pipe leading away from the house. I called RotoRooter and they said they'd be out between 4 - 8. There was a bunch of water all over so I figured I'd clean that in the meantime. Joe has a vacuum for when he had basement issues so he brought it over and I got that taken care of. Pulled a bunch of shit out that got wet and waited for RotoRooter. The dude finally shows up at 11pm. He does his thing and pulls out a handful of baby wipes from deep in the pipe. I felt like an idiot about it. Pretty much my fault as I've flushed a few not even thinking about it. He also said there were some roots in there. He's having a guy come out later today to put a camera down there to see how bad the root damage is. Said it shouldn't be too big a deal and I'd probably just have to flush some kind of treatment down the toilet every few months to keep them down. I didn't even know roots could get into pipes.

The pipe he had to use for access was next to my Arcade cabinet. Had to move that out of the way. Poopy-smelling water flew out when we were trying to get it to back up. Lots of poop dirt on the walls too. So I was cleaning all that shit until around 1 in the morning. In the laundry room where the water was there doesn't seem to be much damage which is good. I had some cardboard boxes on the floor which seemed to have sucked up a lot of the water. Unfortunately one of those boxes had a bunch of my gaming boxes that got wet too. My original N64 box, PS2 and Cube boxes. :( A very minor thing I know, but it kinda sucked. They're not too bad though so I might keep them. I think the first blast of water that backed up was from when my wife was taking a shower and when she ran the washer, so that stuff wasn't poop water. The poop smelling water came later but that was mostly contained. I'm just glad it didn't get into the finished part of the basement and that the carpet is dry (aside from where some water landed when the guy was working).

So fucking dumb. :(

My poop escapades didn't end there either. I'm sitting here at work and I'm getting whiffs of stink. I look down and there is a dog shit in my shoe. I ran and got some paper towels, closed my office door, grabbed a pen and spent 15 minutes picking out dog shit. No one in this office will know if I can help it. Hahahah.
