I hope you have them in a closet in the basement away from anything else because 2950's are LOUD! You will also probably need to replace a few fans in them as well. Otherwise, the are nice systems. I have 8 of them that I deal with on a daily basis. If you put the right linux build on them, they are pretty damm rock solid (as in multi-year uptime (for those who don't know the language, that means multiple years between the last time you needed to reboot the system)).

Are you sure you can use the disks you think you can use in it? Mine use SCSI 320 disks, which are not cheap in any way shape or form.

http://www.buy.com/prod/seagate-cheetah ... 25164.html

And yes, that works out to $5.60+ per GB. Your typical pre-Thialand flood price for SATA disk was $0.06 - $0.11 per GB.....

We mostly deal with the R series now (R410, R610), but we do still have a shitpile of x950s laying around. They are loud at full load, but in a closet all alone they are decently quiet. I think what i'm going to actually do is sell all this shit and buy a new Dell tower server. These 2950s are near new. The fans are pristine. They were used in a data center environment, and only for about 2 years. So, not very dusty. And yeah, they have the LSI/3Ware SATA raid controllers. I did inherit quite a few SCSI and SAS drives as well, including some 750 gig SAS seagates, and i have no idea what to do with them. Ebay probably.

If you need/want SCSI drives, i might be able to hook you up cheaply. We are about to recycle a TON of them.

last summer we swapped out a bunch of Dell 2950's and replaced them with a few (Oracle) Sun X4170's. Those tiny little 1u servers are monsters (dual 6 core xeons with hyperthreading). Their fans are loud as bejeezus too. I drooled over them for like a week when we first got them in.

Nice I bought a Portercable framing nailed for like 200 and it definitely paid for itself doing my basement.

I upgraded my universal disc player in my home theater setup from a Denon DVD-3910 to an Oppo BDP-95. I had been using the Denon less and less lately, and really was only using it for SACD playback, pretty much everything else was being done via my HTPC. While I like the HTPC, there are times when it can just be a pain to watch a new Blu-ray due to needing software updates for dealing with the DRM. The HTPC also does not support 3D Blu-ray (not that I have a 3D capable screen, but in the future I probably will).

So it was time to upgrade.

Just bought Patrice O'Neal's new comedy album Mr. P from Amazon. The MP3 download for the full album was only $7.99.
They're not capitalizing on his death. He was in the final stages of getting this album together before he died. So its not like they're getting old stuff he never released and throwing in on a CD. This is all new stuff from a show he did in 2011.

Its already the #1 comedy album on Billboard and #35 on the Top 100 Albums.
Good shit.

Yeah also a decent chunk of the profit (if not all, I can't remember) goes to his wife.

It's so fucking funny. That CD and the Elephant in the Room special are both fucking amazing. It's been a long time since I laughed that hard.

I tried before. I made a Pale Ale and a Lager.
Pale Ale was terrible. Lager was decent. But that was before I was really into different beers.
I should try it again but its a long process. I still have the ingredients to make an Octoberfest somewhere.

I wonder what you'll do first. Tablet or Vita?

Tablet, I'm days away from the that. I told you Vita, Final Fantasy X and a price drop on MLB the Show, and right now FFX has no release date. I've wanted a laptop or tablet for a while now for screwing around down in the basement, I have no plans of putting a computer down there until I have no room upstairs.

That's the way to go if you just want to read books. Those "e-ink" screens are awesome. Dems been using hers a lot lately.
