I'm not baptized and my mom and my aunt are hardcore catholics who are constantly up my ass about it and say shit like "I just want to know you are going to heaven." My mom even tried getting me to take classes...fuck that.

I'm glad my parents never forced religion on me when I was a child. They kinda panicked a little when they found out I was an atheist though, but they got over it.

Agree on the title.

Also I don't know if I'd really classify myself as an atheist. Probably way closer to agnostic. It's that people are arguing over something that is impossible to verify, but seems massively unlikely to me.

There's something about the claim that a conscious being created our little planet that bugs me. Like the whole "we are the chosen ones" shit. When I think of that scenario I think "Why isn't there some other form of life?" Why are all of the other planets in out solar system and known universe uninhabited? If there was a God why would he bother making other planets? Did he try to put people on those planets and they all failed/died for whatever reason? If so couldn't that same god have made species capable of surviving on those other planets? If he could make us (and is all powerful) you would have to assume that would be possible, so why hasn't it been done? Why aren't their species who breathe carbon or are capable of surviving the temperatures on the other planets?

I just can't believe that any conscious god would only experiment with one planet and leave all this other shit uninhabited.

Now If you believe in god as more of a force than a being that makes more sense to me.

What makes you think all other planets are uninhabited? There's a very high probability that other forms of life form exists in the universe. We just haven't met them yet. And if they did come to our planet, we would probably all die or be enslaved.

Well maybe the real God uses tricks, you know? Maybe he's not omnipotent. He's just been around so long he knows everything.

I might be the only to get Phil's joke.

Like I said before, I swore I was going to marry my own Andie Macdowell.

I'm not saying all other planets in the universe are I meant more our solar system, why bother making 7 other planets with nothing?. We don't know if the universe is uninhabited but I'd be willing to bet the majority of it is, and I wouldn't be surprised if the planets that were inhabited were by creatures far less intelligent than us.

The unknown is unknown and I hate it lol.

hahaha, there is no story. I was just in love with her after that movie and Multiplicity. But then I completely forgot until I watched Groundhog day recently.

Great thread name. My philosophy on the subject is I should be a good person because its right, not so I can be rewarded at the end of my days. And it's very dickish to look down on those who don't share your views, atheist or christian. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm glad everyone liked my thread title. I chuckled at my own joke too.
Figured Baltar's birthday thread was getting way off topic.

my parents kind of forced us to be catholic as kids. my brothers went to catholic school, but i did not. we all had to do the sunday school stuff and the communions and confirmations etc.. we are all pretty much atheists now. funny enough, my mom is too now. forcing is not the way to go. i think phils approach is pretty forward thinking.

excuse i

look at us having a semi-intelligent convo about religion hah. see? we can do it. we're all grown ups here. i don't know why dusk got so bent out of shape back then. people here have the same view as he does, but he flipped his lid for no reason. i dont think we were ganging up on him. he was just inserting his own beliefs into almost every thread possible. he was the jahovis witness of atheists hah.

my wife is atheist. i am catholic. we're about to have a baby, and i dont know what we're going to do. well, we havent really talked about it either. it just hasnt come up. she has zero issues with me being who i am (which is to say not a very "good" catholic hah). i mean to bring it up to her but it just never happens. so idk.

some people cant hold discussions on things they are really passionate about. Which is why politics and religion are usually bad topics to discuss. maybe it is just that most of us here don't give enough of a shit to really argue. unless someone starts being super intolerant or generally being an asshole and then they get jumped on.

haha, yeah that was the thing that really started to get to me. I've got no problem with his beliefs or his opinions of religious people. But he would take any thread and just make a random jab at christians.
I get the feeling he (along with a lot of these other internet atheists) was forced to go to church when he was younger and resented everyone for it, so he's making up for it now.
