No, but he might be called a reader.

Snap, crackle and pop. Haha.

I actually did think about that after I posted it. So I guess you successfully deflated my argument. But I still don't like the term gamer.

Honestly, I have no issue with people considering themselves hardcore or casual. The issue is with people looking down on others because they are not as skilled or dedicated to their hobby as they are. So the issue is with elitism, not with the labels.

One of the biggest problems is that the word has become synonymous with elitism, and I'll argue one of the reasons it has so many different definitions and usages is because everyone modifies the damn thing to prove how elite they are.

The other problem is the term 'Hardcore Gamer' has absolutely no definitive definition. I could find every single person in the world that plays videogames and find some quality to them that would qualify them as being 'Hardcore' if I took into account the myriad of ways the word has been used, and continues to be used.

Steve could be elite for being such a good Counter-Strike player, same with Spiker and Shibby among a myriad of other board users.

Phil with his huge collection of different consoles and videogames could be considered Hardcore as well.

Hell, my mother with her Zuma addiction, playing 6 hours a day and having one of the top 20 scores on the internet could be considered hardcore.

My 14 year old brother who knows everything there is to know about all the Halo games could be Hardcore.

Russell Casse wrote:
Yeah, everyone has their own definition of hardcore.

That exact sentence from Russell Casse is the very reason why the term is broken and thus meaningless. Language cannot function if definitions of words are relative and subjective.

Actually, the term hardcore just has a lot of definitions. There are other words that are relative and subjective. The english language is not black and white.

Those definitions are usually very distinct from each other though, which means it's very easy to tell what form of the word you're using.

and even the ones that have 2 or 3 similar meanings there is a kind of cohesion and distinction between them to figure out what's going on.

Perhaps hardcore just needs more specific qualifiers added to them than just plain "gamer". Like hardcore CS player. But then again, what some people might consider hardcore, other would not. That being said, I don't think any of us are hardcore CS players. At least not anymore. I guess we're more like retired-hardcore casual CSers. haha

bwahaha, in 3 sentences you settled the sentiment of how I feel about the whole hardcore/casual thing haha.

When did simply telling people "I really like videogames" go out of style?

Yes, and in every one of your examples it is implied that they have played enough to be considered 'hardcore gamers'. Anyone who has a large game collection, plays zuma 6 hours a day, or can kick ass at Counter-strike obviously has put a great deal of time in the medium. The reason people don't like to label themselves as such is because there is a stigma attached to the word at this point from obnoxious people who equate hardcore with better.

It's all about the elitism.

I'm not going to get into implicature here. Now we're stepping into the realm of dissertation material.

In the most basic of ways I'd say you are on to something, but I'm not convinced. There's something more specific to it then just playing games a lot, it would come down to literally documenting cases of when people use the word and ask them what they meant by it.

I mean now we're going into the implicature beneath implicature and all that it entails.

I would also say you don't need to play a lot of videogames to be hardcore either. There's tons of definitions that even I've laid out that leave openings for not playing TONS.

Collecting games, or even tuning up a rig doesn't necessarily mean that you play tons of games. Beating the shit out of a game doesn't mean you sink tons of hours into it, you could just be a natural at it, or it could be an accumulation of years of playing it for a few hours here and a few hours there.

Then there are people like me who love watching game vids, and who love reading game history, or even reading old strategy guides. I know a ton of shit about games I've never played.

What if you're hardcore because you just like keeping up with industry news, or because you made a website devoted to videogames? Doesn't mean you sink a lot of time in it.

True, in many cases people do sink a lot of time into games, but the point is this word is such that there's nothing that is precise with it.

And even with the case of time, are you hardcore if you're playing 12 hours a day? or is it something like you play videogames 3 hours a day but you've done it for X amount of years? Is it many games or just one game that you put this time into? Or is it just some total number of hours in ones life that have to be devoted to games, like if I spend at least 5,000 hours of my life then am I hardcore?

See there's ambiguity, and then there's this shit.

that's been my stance, I don't need to quantify my love of video games in order to earn internet cred.

I have no problem with someone saying "I really like videogames" or "I'm a hardcore gamer". They both quantify your enjoyment of the media to the same extent. The only difference is that 'hardcore gamer' implies that you actually play the games. It just that so many people use the term 'hardcore gamer' as a sign of nerd supremacy, that using it at all now indicates that you feel that way too. This is what I have issue with.

If I like it, I like it. If you don't like what I like, then fuck you. That's how I see it.

I don't know exactly what you mean by that... I'll take it as a compliment I guess.

At the same time I was happy with my reply and actually have it saved in a document titled BALTAR'S WRATH! Just in case shit gets crazy again.
