Yeah, I watched this earlier today and got pretty excited about it. I really hope it's a strong return to form, but I'm already ready for people to hate it.

By the way, wasn't Home on the Range the final 2D Disney movie? That movie was a mucking nightmare, and I was excited to see that.

ahh you're right, phil, i do think home on the range was the last 2D disney feature...i'll fix it in the nerdlog post.

dante, the black cauldron was done by disney in the early 80's, and is considered the lowest point ever in the disney animation unit. the in-fighting and power struggle within the ranks tore major rifts among the staff, and thus the black cauldron is considered by many to be the darkest, and least inspiring film ever produced from the mouse.

Nice article. I've been searching for news on this for a while, and this is the first thing I've found with any substance. I'm surprised Michael Sporn hasn't posted this on his blog yet.

I can't wait to see The Princess and the Frog, and more importantly, its effects on the industry.

I really am looking forward to this. I saw the trailer a while back and almost had to double-take, I seriously couldn't believe I saw a new 2D! movie coming out. I'll have to grab some of my animation buddies at school and go see it when it comes out.

yeah im really excited to see it.

however, what's important to remember is the audience its trying to reach. its a family friendly film and will be toward children. its not going to be the second coming of christ, but it will be a very entertaining film.

It's funny how Cartoon Brew completely erupted when they posted the teaser. A lot of praise, a lot of boos, all of the comments a bit premature, considering how little was shown.

I have to say that regardless of the content, I'll be happy to see this movie. It could be another run of the mill Disney Princess (TM) flick, and I'll be entertained just to watch a 2D film. And frankly, I think anyone who wishes 2D animation to make a full resurrection should see it as well, because even if the film ends up being bland story-wise, people like the Disney execs look at ticket sales. They want to know if 2D is marketable anymore.

And of course, 2D IS marketable. They thought 3D films were so big because they were 3D, but really, it was because the Pixar films were so masterfully written. But if this 2D film is a big hit at the box office, well, then maybe some more adventurous (or risky...or ambitious, depending on your view) films will come into creation.

No way. Jasmine is my least favorite.

I'd have to go with Ariel and then Bell.
Ariel is definitely my favorite.

Man, this is a subject which has come into my life far too many times.

My favorite is Ariel for sure. Jasmine's second.

BTW, I just reread that "Stop searching for Gadget porn" post from a few months back, and I burst out laughing once again.

i pretty much take anything written at cartoonbrew with a giant grain of salt. jerry beck has a head on his shoulders and has a genuine love of the art, where i feel amid has a very skewed version of what animation should be (i.e. if it doesn't look like UPA, or from the 40's then its crap). pretty much all the comments over there tend to swing towards the negative point of view on just about every topic.

my fav? hmm...maybe bell, maybe meg from hercules.

Ahh, yes. Meg is a good choice.

I've had to completely detach my own opinions when browsing Cartoon Brew. Jerry is both a nice guy and a knowledgeable historian, but Amid had really pissed me off in the past. I actually stopped going for a while when he made some really snarky comments about Chris Georgenes' Flash book. I started going back when I lightened up and simply accepted that a lot of the opinions there are just simply closed-minded and there's really nothing one can do about it...

Can I just love them all in my big royal harem?

We can have huge orgies in front of the Baltar Altar

I'm glad they're making this movie, Disney needs a renaissance of 2D animation. Leave the CG stuff to the big boys @ Pixar.
