Movie Info of the Week (May 2-6 2011)

My DVD/Blu-Ray Pick
Green Hornet

The Green Hornet – I never got around to seeing this movie and I heard mixed reactions. Maybe that’s why I never saw it, not enough positive feedback to persuade me. But it still seems like it could be fun. I’m a fan of Seth Rogen and director Michel Gondry has created some amazing projects, including one of my favorite movies, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Christoph Waltz was amazing as the villain in Inglourious Basterds so I’d like to see him as a baddie yet again. It got caught up in the superhero genre even though its not really a superhero type movie. More like a vigilante story with comedy mixed in. Now that its coming out on video, I’ll definitely be checking it out.

My Theater Pick

Thor – I am finding it a little hard to get pumped up for the various comic book movies due out this year and in the coming years. Maybe its overkill? I don’t know but Thor isn’t really sparking much interest from me. I felt the same way about Iron Man and ended up really enjoying the hell out of that movie. In fact, it was one of my Top 10 movies of 2008. I’m hoping Thor surprises me too but the idea of a Thunder God coming down to Earth and trying to “fit in” with modern times while battling the other gods, just doesn’t get the hype train moving out of this station. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman are fine actors and all, and Kenneth Branagh is a good director, but I guess the story just isn’t jumping out at me. I will still see it regardless.

Box Office Results
Fast Five

Holy Hell. Fast Five made over $80 million at the box office this past weekend, setting a record as biggest April opening ever. EVER! Fast Five now owns that month. Insane. Part 5 in the series has made more in the opening weekend than any of the others. For sure we will be seeing Part 6 and maybe even 7. The other new releases bombed big time because Fast Five stole everyone’s cash. Summer blockbuster season starts this Friday so we’ll see if Paul Walker and Vin Diesel can hold on to that coveted spot.

Also coming out in stores this week is The Dilemma, From Prada to Nada and The PJs Season 1.

Also coming out in theaters this weekend is Something Borrowed and Jumping The Broom.

Movie Info of the Week (Nov 22-26 2010)

My DVD/Blu-Ray Pick

The ExpendablesSylvester Stallone did something special for his latest film. He brought together action stars of today and yesterday to make a ridiculous ensemble cast. Names like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and cameos from Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke and plenty more. Its an old school action lovers’ dream. Sly Stallone knows how to cater to his fans and I hope he continues to make films his own way. Even though I wish this movie could have been more than what it was, its still a decent action flick and I’ll continue supporting the man who brought us Rambo and Rocky.

My Theater Pick

FasterThe Rock stopped being The Rock and started making family friendly films a few years ago. He was bashed by his professional wrestling fans and action movie fans in general. He was being looked at as a possible new age Arnold Schwarzenegger with cool action flicks like The Rundown and Walking Tall. But he didn’t want to be typecast into the macho action guy. He became Dwayne Johnson, the actor. But now it looks like he’s reaching back to his badass roots for an R rated, violent, shoot ‘em up type movie. Hopefully this sparks something in his brain and makes him realize he’s meant to do these kinds of flicks.

Box Office Results
Harry Potter

Its no surprise that Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 1 tore shit up at the box office. Since its the beginning of the end, people are very interested in the conclusion of their time with Harry and the gang. It was the biggest opening ever for a Potter film with over $125 Million over the weekend. That is just insane. It didn’t even have the 3D price hike which Part 2 will definitely have. I can’t even imagine what this means for the big finale coming in July.

Also coming out in stores this week is the Julia Roberts sapfest Eat Pray Love and the fake documentary from Joaquin Phoenix called I’m Still Here.

Also hitting theaters this Wednesday for the holiday is Love & Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a viagara salesman who meets Anne Hathaway and sparks up a relationship. Also Disney‘s newest animated flick based on the classic Rapunzel tale, Tangled, with voices by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. Also the musical Burlesque starring Christina Aguilera and Cher.
