NES Marathon Wrap Up!

The dust has settled as the NES Marathon for Child’s Play has come to an end Saturday at Noon. I needed a day to recover and now I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on the event and give a huge thanks to everyone who came out, contributed and helped make for one of the most unforgettable nights of my life.

First, seriously, thanks to everyone for their amazing support. We didn’t quite have a goal for the amount of money we wanted to raise for Child’s Play, but needless to say that the estimated 1,300 dollars we made (with payments still pending from some) was way more than I had ever imagined. I couldn’t believe the loyalty that some of the people had who came out to watch the event. When we were setting up for the event on Thursday night and ran into a few people in the UStream.tv chat room we were floored. When I saw multiple people in the room an hour before the event started I was pretty sure we were going to have a great 24 hours. I can’t thank everyone enough, to the people who came out, the people who donated whether it was money for Child’s Play, drinks, food or video games for the event, the websites who linked us, I could go on and on.

The goal of the event was to see how many NES games we could take down within 24 hours. The ending number was 12 games, plus one game done on a second NES, and quite a few games that were close to being finished. Twelve games doesn’t seem like many, but when you consider we played through some of the NES’ toughest titles like Contra, Kid Icarus, and Metroid, it’s quite an accomplishment.

The afternoon started out with a swift run through Contra. There was a comment made over at GoNintendo that we would be playing Contra for 24 hours considering how hard it is. I personally felt compelled to squash that comment by taking that game down first. There was no need for the 30 life code as I plowed through the game in under 20 minutes, only losing 3 men and having 8 extra lives by the time I finished. After that I decided to take down something a little meatier and decided on Kid Icarus. Two hours later (which I’m willing to say most of that time was spent wandering the third dungeon) Medusa was defeated and Angel Land was saved.

We did a little test run and I was pretty surprised to already see a few people gathering in the Ustream chat room. Damn cool if I do say so myself. If you’re into the whole Marathon thing, don’t forget to spread the word. All the action starts tomorrow at 12 noon (est). I’m looking forward to it, and I gotta grab some Z’s before the event starts. Thanks for your support. First up, Contra!

NATIONAL PARK, New Jersey – Shamoozal.com is proud to present the “NES Marathon for Child’s Play,” a live 24 hour event in hopes to raise money for charity.

Beginning July 11th at 12PM EST, the event will see Shamoozal staff members play and complete as many Nintendo Entertainment System games as possible over the course of 24 hours. The team plans on tackling classic titles such as Metroid, Contra, Kid Icarus, Castlevania, Megaman 2, Punch Out!!, and the original Super Mario Brothers trilogy, among plenty of other proven favorites. The entire 24-hour session will be streaming live on Shamoozal’s ustream.tv page.

“There’s something about retro games that people still can’t get enough of,” says site owner Phil Summers, “and we’re hopeful that pairing up these legendary games along with a great cause will help show that there are plenty of people who love games and are willing to give back to the community.”

The Last Copy

We’re really sorry that we made you guys wait over three months for the latest installment into the GFG series. Guess the idea of having a cartoon a month was just a bit more than we were able to chew. You’ve heard us talking about it everywhere, and today we’re finally able to show off our new short “The Last Copy.”

This was a bit of a hard episode to pull off, and Frank worked over time on the thing. There’s much more going on in it than previous episodes of GFG thus far. On top of that, we also brought back three old characters, all of whom have received a face lift since the last time you’ve seen them. Everyone did a great job on this I think, from Steve’s script, Frank’s animation to Joe’s sound (I won’t be patting myself on the back, ha). Anyway I won’t bore you, go and enjoy it.

The HD versions are up now too!

NewsFlash – Women Love Dr. Mario

Dr Mario

About two weeks ago I downloaded Dr. Mario Online for the Wii. I have wanted to dive into WiiWare since Nintendo launched the program and Dr. Mario seemed like the most complete package they have to offer. It’s the same game we all know and love (or hate). However there is a cool new mode for co-op play using the Wiimote, and there is also a fun online mode which is where I’ve spent most of my time.

First off, I’m getting my ass kicked in the Dr. Mario Online circuit. I’m talking serious beatings where I almost consider never playing the game again simply out of embarrassment. I’ve also noticed, thanks to the Miis, that most of the ass whooping is coming from the ladies. The only thing I can take away from this is that women love Dr. Mario. Of all the people I’ve played over the last few weeks, I’m going to say that 75% of my opponents are women. Also, a glance at the global rankings shows plenty of women in the Top 10. And they all put the hurting on me. I know I’m not a Dr. Mario master or anything, but I can barely hang with these ladies.

I also had my wife try out Virus Buster, the new co-op mode, with me and we actually had a good time. It’s a lot of fun because it takes serious thought to solve everything together. Playing Dr. Mario using the Wii pointer also feels really good, and Nintendo scaled up the presentation to fit using the pointer. So if you have a lady friend have her play a few rounds. Maybe she’ll get so into it that she’ll venture into online territory, further putting a dent in my record.

Wall-E – My new friend

WallE

Who would have guessed that the best love story of the year would feature robots instead of humans? I sure wouldn’t have, yet it’s not that I doubted Pixar could pull it off, I just wasn’t really sure what WallE was about. It wasn’t until recently that we found out WallE was about a robot trying to find his companion, but I never expected it to be a full blown love story.

WallE starts out simple enough, with the robot going about his normal routine of cleaning up what is essentially a post apocalyptic earth. The first 20 or so minutes doesn’t feature a lick of dialogue, yet the audience can’t help but fall in love with WallE almost immediately. I could easily have watched an entire movie of WallE just going about his normal day because Pixar has made it that interesting. WallE’s opening moments captivate the audience in much the same way that Tom Hanks does during Cast Away. You simply can’t take your eyes off of him.

When Eve, WallE’s iPod-ish looking would be girl friend shows up things really get interesting. The first time the two bots speak to each other is nothing but pure movie magic. While we watch their relationship grow, the real villians of the film, both global warming and obesity, begin to show their faces. Surprisingly deep themes for a Pixar movie, but the team handles them with absolute care.

Animation production on “The Last Copy” is now complete. Whew! Pending any tweaks here and there, Phil and I will have the final build composited by tomorrow. From there, we’ll hand it off to sound engineer extraordinaire, Joe, for him to put his touch to it. Its gonna be a busy weekend what with it being July 4th (yikes! its officially the 4th right now!), so hopefully expect a final build by early next week!
