The Best and Worst of Wrestlers in Movies, Part 1

Throughout the years, professional wrestlers have tried making the transition into the acting world. And why not? Their jobs are to act on television already so why not try to launch that into a movie career. Well, there have been some good, some bad, and some UGLY! This is the best and the worst (in no particular order) of movies starring wrestlers.

Suburban Commando

Suburban Commando – Hulk Hogan was the most popular wrestler of all time. He was a household name in the 80s and most of the 90s. Hell, you could even say he’s a household name still today. Most people know the name without ever watching a single professional wrestling match in their lifetime. He attempted a movie career starting with a small part in Rocky III as Thunder Lips. Stallone hand picked him for the role of the wrestler who challenges the boxer. His movie career didn’t exactly pan out but he has a good amount in his Filmography.
Suburban Commando is a family comedy from 1991 where Hogan stars as Shep Ramsey, an alien whose ship is damaged in an interstellar battle and must hide on Earth until he can make repairs. He befriends Christopher Lloyd and lives with his family. So he tries fitting in with the Earthlings and helping out with daily activities. If you’ve seen it then you’ll probably remember the skateboard scene where the Hulkster shows off his moves to the neighbor kids. Or maybe the cantaloupe scene where he “finds a good one”. This is one of my favorites from the ‘so bad its good’ category. Hogan is a terrible actor but you can’t help laughing at the ridiculous plot. Extra tidbit of information: the movie also has a cameo from The Undertaker as a bounty hunter in his only movie role ever. He has one line, You’re A Dead Man Ramsey!

You Should Probably Play Drill Dozer

Drill Dozer

I bought the late GBA title Drill Dozer a few months ago based on the fact that it was made by GameFreak (the Pokey-man guys) and was super cheap at Target. Aside from that, I knew nothing about the game other than what I heard from EGM’s glowing review a few years ago.

Drill Dozer is essentially an SNES game that somehow got stuck in limbo and emerged 10 years later on the GBA. Well, that’s how it feels anyway. It’s a somewhat slow paced action/puzzle platformer that features a rag tag group of some rather unlikable character designs. The game reminds me of an SNES title (aside from graphics) because the whole concept is designed around the L and R triggers, sort of like the first few SNES games where Nintendo built games around those two triggers (see F-Zero and Pilot Wings).

I guess this is an MGS4 review

MGS4

It’s funny, we hyped the absolute shit out of Metal Gear Solid 4 around these parts, and since the actual game has dropped we haven’t written a single Nerdlog post about it. I’m here to remedy that.

Steve and I have already beaten the game. We’ve talked about it at length through the Smorg and through IM. To cut to the chase, we love it. Frank is currently in the middle of it, and I let Sith borrow my PS3 and the game so he can play catch up. I guess that’s the thing about MGS4, it’s hard to talk about the game without going into specifics. Once you go into specifics, you go into spoilers.

Like I mentioned during the latest and greatest Shamoozal Radio Podcast, I was submitting a skateboard for this year’s annual 3 Feet High show. I haven’t used actual paint in over eight years, so I was a bit daunted when I was about to start working on it. However, I had a blast doing this. Hopefully after GFG#3 is finished and I get through a certain sneaking mission I’ll be able to paint some more. Head here to check out previous year’s entries. There’s a lot of really great work by some amazing artists a few of which I am happy to have worked with both in the past and present.

Above is my submission titled “Hang’n Out”. I have a few other pics over at my blog. If you live in the area, head on over to Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ at 7PM this Monday June 23rd and check out the show. See ya there!

Listen to the show, and then tell us some of your favorite moments. We wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t for you guys.
