The Tekken movie that wasn’t: The Avenging Fist (拳神)

Posted under: Movies, TV and Anime

With news of a Hollywood produced Tekken movie making the rounds on the game blogs, it seems like a good time to take a look back at the Hong-Kong Tekken movie that almost was. For those that don’t know the story here’s the basic gist: back around 1999-2000 Wong Jing & Andrew Lau Wai-Keung set out to make a Tekken movie. The only problem was, well… they neglected to get permission from Namco. After a bunch of litigation and Namco finally turning them down, they changed some stuff around and made The Avenging Fist (AKA In the Name of Heroes) a special effects kung-fu movie set in a distant future.

Much of the plot revolves around the kung-fu style known as The Avenging Fist (surprise). Years ago a man named Thunder developed this technique that would unlock the other 90% of human potential making them a fighting god. Fast forward to a fascist future and technology has stepped in to replicate this technique with a ‘Power Glove’ and yes… it is so bad. Don’t mistake my sarcasm for dislike, I love this movie. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes kung-fu and/or special effects. It’s got some ultra-cheesy moments, but overall I think you’ll agree that this movie is a classic. Before I tell you guys the good news that was hinted at during Shamoozal Radio #11, I need to let you in on the bad news. Remember that promise I made about having two cartoons done by the end of the year? Well, lets just say that the second one probably isn’t coming in time. However it has nothing to do with me being lazy, we have had a legit change in plans. I’ll reveal the sweet news in the beginning of the year, but until then, have faith!

Games of the Year

With the year wrapping up, Steve and I decided to write about the games we‘ve played this year that really won us over. In other words, the two of us have decided to choose our personal Games of the Year. This year started off slow, but the amount of highly rated games that came out after July is nothing short of astonishing. We at the Shamoozal have not been able to play them all (obviously), so these lists are based solely on what we have played. With that noted, continue on to find out what stole a spot in our hearts in the year Oh Seven.

Find out what took top honors after the jump….

Charlie Brown

Can you hear it? It’s the sound of Shamoozal Radio, a force so powerful that we can hear faint whispers of it traveling from the future.

The gang is gearing up for our Holiday podcast, and I can say right now everyone is in for a treat. You already know about the interview we’re going to play with James Rolfe, the Angry Video Game Nerd. You also know that we plan on handing out one of his DVDs, and this is how it’s going to go down.

At the end of the interview we did a quick rapid fire session of 10 ridiculous questions in which James can only give an “A” or “B” answer. You need to be in the chat room while we do this segment live, on Friday the 14th, and it’s going to be up to you to guess which answer he is going to give. The first person to write the correct answer gets a point. Whoever ends up with the most points wins the game, and a copy of The Angry Video Game Nerd Vol. 1.

Cintiq 12WX in the Shamoozal Warehouse

Cintiq

I just made up the whole Shamoozal Warehouse bit. I guess you can say this is where most of the magic happens. So my brand spankin’ new Cintiq showed up today and of course I set it up as quickly as humanly possible. Setup actually took a bit more work than I thought, and a bit of managing to get all 500 wires in a decent spot.

Not shown in the above is the giant converter switch box that powers the Cintiq. In the commercial for the Cintiq, they showed a woman walking around with it as if the device is super portable. What they didn’t show you is that a lot of effort goes into connecting this thing, and hauling it around would probably be a pain in the ass. Anyway, the pad is bigger than my old Intuos 6×8 which is cool and sort of sucks at the same time because the space on my desk is starting to disappear as I add more gizmos to my set up. It’s only slightly thicker than my Intuos, which is pretty impressive, and I’d say it’s only a tad bit heavier as well.

It basically acts as a second monitor when everything is all ready to go. Like having a second monitor, you can drag objects to either screen. However, when you’re using the Cintiq to, you know, actually draw with, there’s a handy toggle switch located on the top of the button layout. Using this switch will flick your cursor to either screen without you actually having to drag stuff. For example, say you open an object in Photoshop, if you click the bar to drag, just hit the toggle switch and it’ll automatically place the image on the Cintiq screen. Pretty nifty I thought.
