Poor Suda 51 - No More Heroes Destined to Flop

I caught this story over at Kotaku this morning about how ‘No More Heroes’ creator Goichi Suda and executive producer Yasuhiro Wada had an event at a game shop in Akihabara to promote the title. According to Kotaku, the duo was trying to hand out NMH themed toilet paper, and hopefully sign copies of the game. After about 20 minutes and no buyers, a member of the Japanese game press gave the two a pity buy, and purchased the game so they could sign it for him.
Poor Suda (located on the right), the guy just can’t seem to catch a break and it looks like he could cry at any second. Meanwhile Wada could already give two shits about what he’s doing at this event. Considering the amount of Wii’s that have sold over in Japan, and the shortage of quality games, you would think that gamers over there would be more interested in this product. Though I guess Japan just isn’t into games like they used to be. Though another thing I heard is that this event took place on a Thursday morning, so most of the population was probably at work or school. No matter which way you slice it, the whole scene is still a little sad.
The thing is, the game is destined to do just as well here in the States. While Japanese gamers just want to balance themselves on a board, play ancient RPGs, and tap on touch screens, American gamers just want more FPS titles, Madden, and licensed garbage. It seems that real true gamers are a dying breed these days no matter which country your located in. In the case of No More Heroes, the title couldn’t be anymore important to the Wii’s future. Aside from quality Nintendo product, the Wii is seeing some of the worst titles ever released on a console in the history of game machines. A glance over at IGN and you’ll find a trifecta of terrible reviews from the last few days including the amazing Cruisn’, and two games I never even heard of before, with a total score of 5.2 when you add them all up. Terrible.
When NMH hits next month, it is not going to get 9’s across the board. This doesn’t mean the game isn’t going to be a great title, and by the looks of things I personally couldn’t be any more excited for it. Wii owners have been begging for an original game, something with substance, and something that’s a bit more “mature” than your typical Wii offering. This is exactly what NMH is, and if this thing doesn’t sell you can kiss the Wii’s adult titles good bye. Quality control is all but lost on this machine, and when absolute horse shit like Carnival Games is making some serious buck, while something with brains like NMH gets ignored, that is when the real problems are going to surface.
Our voice at the Shamoozal isn’t that big, but I’m seriously thinking of putting some kind of campaign together to try and get awareness out for this game. I know a lot of sites tried to do this with Zack & Wiki, but lets face it, if this game is destined to fail, of course ZDub didn’t stand a chance. This isn’t the last you have heard about No More Heroes from me, mark my words.
