Death ProofWe Are MarshallThe Condemned
ZooBloodrayne 2Gracie

Death Proof – the Quentin Tarantino story of Stuntman Mike (played by Kurt Russell) as he stalks and picks up on girls to kill with his car. He drives a stunt car which is protected on the driver side and deadly anywhere else during a crash. He kills them inside the car, outside the car, and any way possible just to get some thrills. This is the second part of the Grindhouse movie from earlier this year.
We Are Marshall – the true story of the Marshall University football team that died in a plane crash. They bring in a new coach (Matthew McConaughey) in order to totally restructure a team in a town where no one wants to think about football anymore.
The Condemned – a bunch of convicts on Death Row are dropped off on an island where they must kill each other to win freedom all while it is being broadcast on the Internet. Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vinnie Jones star in this action flick.
Zoo – a documentary on a group of people who are into zoophilia. It was researched after a story broke in 2006 about a man who died while trying to have sex with a horse. The filmmakers interview these weirdo people but all identities are secret and scenes are only reenacted and not filmed live.
Bloodrayne 2 – the straight to DVD sequel to the videogame movie from 2006. Its 100 years after the first unsuccessful movie and Rayne is back to fight a bunch of vampire cowboys led by Billy The Kid. That’s got to be a joke, right?
Gracie – another straight to DVD movie about a 15 year old girl who fights to be able to play on the boy’s varsity soccer team at her high school. A women’s rights movie so it must be chock full of Female Empowerment.

Two other straight to DVD releases that didn’t have cover art on www.joblo.com (where I get all my movie info) for this week are the animated Superman: Doomsday about the death of Superman and also Blade: House Of Chthon, which is the 4th installment of the Blade series but this time starring rapper Sticky Fingaz as Blade.
As for special editions this week we have a good amount of them. Here’s the rundown: Commando, Wall Street, Deliverance, Troy, Saturday Night Fever, Flashdance, and Selena.
For TV shows we get Smallville Season 6, Boston Legal Season 3, Ghost Whisperer Season 2, Everybody Loves Raymond Season 9, Married With Children Season 7, Stargate Atlantis Season 3, and the entire Josie & The Pussycats Series.

Avatar Season 3 premiers Friday night

avatarOver the last few weeks I’ve become a big fan of the Nickelodeon original series Avatar: The Last Airbender. For those who don’t know, or have been avoiding it like the plague since it’s a “fake anime” (hint: it’s not), Avatar is about a young boy named Aang who is destined to saved the world. Yeah, a little cliche, but it’s done so well it doesn’t matter.

See, Aang accidentally froze himself for over a 100 years. During that time, he was supposed to grow up and master the four bending elements (air, fire, water, and earth), and put a stop to an impending war. Since he was out of the loop for so long, the war happened, and the evil Fire Nation succeeded in taking over most of the world. Now Aang must be hurried along and master the elements as quickly as possible, and at the same time has to deal with growing up.

A Journey through Metroid II: The Return of Samus

Metroid II boxBelieve it or not, when Metroid II debuted on the Gameboy in 1991, it was sort of a big deal. While the original title still holds a dear place in my heart, I honestly can’t say it has aged with grace. While the core idea of the game is still a great idea, the actual level structure, along with the “bomb and shoot every block” design philosophy isn’t exactly the most sound. Metroid II not only set out to satisfy fans of the original, but also to alleviate some of the problems of the original. At the same time, it needed to overcome and use to its advantage, the limited Gameboy technology.

When Metroid II came out, I remember many of my friends playing through it. They were all stumped in their quest to hunt down 38 Metroids. I didn’t own a Gameboy when the title was released, so I only heard tales of Samus’ quest, and occasionally I’d be able to jump in and shoot a handful of bad guys. From what I remember, none of them actually made it through the labyrinths of SR-388.

Eventually I owned a Gameboy and borrowed Metroid II off of my cousin. Just like everyone else who was playing the game, I too became stuck and unable to advance any further. In fact, I almost quit playing the game all together, but an issue of Nintendo Power had a much needed map. It actually wasn’t the greatest map, it just gave players a general idea of how the structure of SR-388 worked. It was enough to get me through the game, and over 10 game hours later all the Metroids were defeated. I felt that the game was too confusing and too hard, the type of game I would probably never want to play through again. Well over a decade later, all proceeding Metroid games mastered, and Prime 3 still fresh in my mind, I decided it was time to track down a copy of Metroid II and experience it again.

So yeah. I don’t know what’s wrong with the Smorg but its been down since this afternoon. I’m going to send a trouble ticket to our amazingly spotty host and see what’s up. I’m sure they’ll ignore us like usual and when we finally have to call them they’ll just say “its loading fine on our end”.

Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Bloop.

“Bob Pitches A Movie”

Anyone who’s a fan of Bob Odenkirk will be happy to check out his latest commedy short, “Bob Pitches A Movie”. I first saw Bob with his long time partner in crime, David Cross, in Mr. Show which was a commedy series that ran on HBO in the mid 90’s. Mr.Show is easily one of the greatest commedy series ever. Its hard to describe it as its more of a stream of conciousness with skits blending into each other. Bob, David, and the rest of the crew all do an amazing job of playing different characters that would often interact with themselves playing a different role.

This new short is classic Bob Odenkirk. Its amazing how he can play two different characters within the same scene and still have each one stand so clearly apart from each other. The short is really funny which underlines the amazing ignorance that flaunts itself so willfully in Hollywood. So check it out!

Theater Releases for September 14th

September is DUMP month. September and January are notorious for being times when studios just dump movies that they don’t think are summer blockbuster worthy (May-August) or Oscar worthy (November-December). I guess they don’t have much confidence in some of these so they’re hoping for a surprise hit for the month. Anyway, here’s whats on our plate for this September day.

Woodcock
Billy Bob Woodcock.

Mr. Woodcock – the long delayed movie about Seann William Scott’s mom getting into a relationship with the old gym teacher played by Billy Bob Thornton. Hijinx ensue as Billy Bob and Stifler duke it out. It was long delayed because it’s almost the same as School for Scoundrels from last year with Billy Bob and Napoleon Dynamite.

Seriously! Like, the other day, I was watching TV, and I saw an ad for Mountain Dew’s new “Game Fuel”. I mean, this drink totally puts your regular sports drinks to shame. Gatorade’s for those sissies playing football. This shit here’s for gamers. There’s nothing I need more when I’m gaming my ass off into the early hours of the morning than a cold bottle of Game Fuel to keep me going. Game Fuel will give me the edge as its mascot, this Master Chief guy, looks totally bad-ass.

But that’s not all! Read on!

Stranglehold PS3 Demo

stranglehold.jpg

I downloaded this off of PSN last night, and gave it a whirl today during lunch. First off, its file size was 1337MB…pretty leet if you ask me. Its a John Woo “game” “staring” Chow Yun Fat who together have made some of the craziest, corniest shoot’em up movies ever way before Clive Owen banged Monica Belluci on the silver screen. Chow Yun Fat’s exact likeness is recreated for the game as he reprises his role from John Woo’s all-time great cop-slinging-crazy-guns flick Hard Boiled, Inspector “Tequila” Yuen. Yeah, he’s named after his favorite drink.

Anywho, at first I didn’t like it very much, but it grew on me…find out why after the jump…
